The combination of pseudo-incest and BL constitutes a double taboo in BL dramas. In
recent years, pseudo-incest BL dramas have gained significant traction, with three such
dramas released in 2024. These dramas challenge heteronormative hegemony while
subverting the nuclear family structure and traditional ethical norms. Previous BL studies
predominantly focused on audiences or textual analysis, leading to fragmented interpretations
of double taboo BL narratives and the neglect of capitalism in shaping double taboo
narratives. Therefore, a singular research perspective fails to explain why BL dramas have
evolved from the depicting of a single taboo—of homosexuality—to the combination of
pseudo-incest and homosexuality as double taboos. Thus, my thesis examines the following
questions: Why do creators combine pseudo-incest and BL themes in a drama? What are the
driving cultural and market forces for this phenomenon?
Using Foucault’s heterotopia theory as a framework for textual analysis, this study examines
how BL dramas construct dual taboos through narrative strategies and their sociocultural
implications. While double-taboo BL dramas possess subversive potential, their rebellious
edge is diluted by commercial influence. This research aims to uncover the cultural
significance of BL dramas in contemporary society, as well as their complex negotiations
among social norms, ethics, and capitalist markets, in hopes of providing new perspectives
for understanding the interplay between gender culture and commercialised media. |
