Description
Summary:Since International Organization for Standardization has recommended several quality system standards known as the ISO 9000 series, many firms reflected doubts of the suitability and its value in the implementation on construction industry. Many firms did not proceed, or do not intend to proceed with this quality system largely due to their inability to understand the requirements of ISO 9000 well. Further some clauses of ISO 9000 standard is not clear. Until recent years the demand for quality products is on the rise, certainly also in the construction industry. With the enforcement of these standards by many countries including the European Community in 1992, ISO 9000 series is fast being accepted as the international standard for quality systems. This research focused on how the ISO 9002 quality systems can be effectively implemented in the construction of industrial structures. Although the research involved only the study of six construction companies of different sizes, the results from our research is encouraging with various percentages recorded on various items. Company characteristics, quality system prior to implementation and after implementation have been studied, so that we understand the benefits of the application of ISO 9002 quality system. During implementation of ISO 9002 the approach used and problems faced have been described clearly, as such the effects of this quality system also highlighted after their implementation on companies.
