Using different scales, two types of attitudes - cognitive and affective - were studied separately. The population was defined as any individual who holds Singapore citizenship and is above 18 years old. The attitude variables were chosen by an elimination process which started with one hundred and thirty two variables identified through a literature review. Thirty five variables expressing cognitive attitude and fourteen variables expressing affective attitude were found to be representative in Singapore. Nine factors were extracted by applying factor analysis to the cognitive attitude scale. The association of the extracted factors with residents overall attitude towards tourism impact was tested by the stepwise multiple regression model. The data collected by the affective attitude scale underwent a descriptive analysis. Residents were grouped by four categorised factors. These groups were compared by ANOVA test.
