Summary: | The main objective of Computer-aided Process Planning (CAPP) is to ease the job of a process planner by using computer to generate a consistent process plan. The early version of CAPP system is retrieval-based. Subsequently, a generative process planning system emerged as a result of further development. It automates a small portion of the overall process planning function or handles a very restricted domain of parts with a certain degree of human interaction. With the advent of computer technology, many research in geometric reasoning (feature recognition) were carried out to bridge the gap between two islands of automation, CAD system and CAPP system. The domain of various feature recognition techniques developed so far is limited to standard prismatic parts or rotational parts. |
