Summary: | This dissertation is a study of various media accountability systems and regulations for traditional media forms, the Internet and its implications for Singaporean society. The comparison of the different regulatory systems for various traditional media formats and the ubiquitous characteristics of the Internet highlights why it should warrant a different set of considerations. Pertinent to the research purposes of this study, is a qualitative assessment using comparative case studies, interviews, and close readings of online discussions and media reports to explain the challenges faced in the establishment of new media accountability system for local blogging community. Findings revealed that local online communities are unreceptive towards suggestions of any notion/entity perceived to be regulatory in any nature such as a bloggers’ code, association, and community moderation for online communities. This study found that the lack of crowd support, consensus and conception of an implementation mechanism are challenges posed to the establishing of a community moderation system in Singapore. A critical lack of democratic culture continues to forestall its birth. |
