Description
Summary:Singapore Amateur Players is the oldest Chinese local theatre group. It was established in 1955 and its members were mainly alumni of Chung Cheng High School Drama Research Society. It upholds the modern theatre tradition of presenting realist plays. Being the first amateur theatre group in the 50s, Singapore Amateur Players exhibited the spirit of the “Amateur Movement” in China. It showed social awareness and made connection with the masses with performances that they could relate to. In practice, Singapore Amateur Players displayed its uniqueness and outshined other theatre groups. Singapore Amateur Player was very much part of the society, especially so during the instability in the 50s. Its well-being and growth was deeply affected by the upheaval of the society. Thus, its organisation, artistic direction and performances etc were heavily reliant on the various aspects of society.
