The cowherd and the weaving maiden fable is one of the famous folk legends in China. There are different narrative plots in different areas of China, but research related to narrative variants of this story has not been done. 12 different versions of the folk legend on the cowherd and the weaving maiden from different regions of China will be selected for this study. I will summarize and discuss the plot variations in these texts in order to explore the variability of this folk legend. The different variations of the plots of this story have enriched this folk legend and with regards to historical, social and folk beliefs. This famous folk legend has been transmitted from generation for thousands of years and is still actively been read to this day. |
