Summary:Increasing concern on health related effects related due to inhalation of diesel particulates has led to increasingly stringent legislation on particulate emissions from diesel-powered vehicles. At present, the conventional filtration method specified by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is used to determine particulate emissions gravimetrically which is integrated over a transient test cycle. But this time-consuming and labor-intensive method cannot produce real-time particulate measurements, especially during the transient engine operations. Therefore, the development of real-time particulate measurement techniques is crucial not only in providing an alternative to the tedious and time-consuming dilution tunnel procedure but also in allowing real-time particulate analysis.
