Summary:Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) is the technology for linking simulations of various types at multiple locations to create a realistic and complex "virtual world" for the simulation of highly interactive activities. It is initially employed mainly for military applications. Today, this emerging technology has found its niche in many other industries and is successfully adopted by many applications such as entertainment, training, planning and analysis. The growing demand in such applications ushers in the need for higher realism and fidelity in larger scale simulated environment. Thus, it poses a great challenge for DIS researchers to look into more efficient bandwidth reduction techniques and better scalability solutions so that the technology can remain competitive.
