Summary: | This paper aims to discover some behaviors of public on public transport i.e. Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) in Singapore. Courtesy Campaign has been launched by government asking public to give up their seat onboard trains for the needy. Train riders learn to show care and concern in public space towards people whom they may not know. Civility is promoted by government in hope for a more democratic society. Through this report, I seek to understand public’s attitudes towards government campaign in relation to their emotions towards giving or not giving up seats for strangers on trains. Data presented here is based on 30 in-depth interviews. Respondents come from different gender, job scope and cultural and educational backgrounds. I attempt to understand the reasons for giving up or not giving up seats from the riders’ perspectives. |
