This report is based on a project which was carried out to develop a novel microfluidic sensor for the measurement of dynamic liquid interfacial tension. The system consists of a microfludic chip with micro channel network, optical detection system and a Basic-X microcontroller. The channels of the chip are in the shape of a T, with the sample in the main channel and air being injected through the other channel. These channels are fabricated using a CO2 laser on a PMMA substrate. The fixed flow rate of air and sample fluid leads to formation of bubbles at a fixed frequency. This frequency can be detected through an optical set up. The optical set up uses a LED and detector for that. The frequency changes depending on the surface tension of the fluid. The sensor can also be used to measure the Critical Micelle Concentration (CMC) of surfactant. This system has the potential for the measurement of surface tension using minute amount of sample liquid as compared to the present commercial forms which require large amount of solution.
