sg-ntu-dr.10356-360642023-03-11T17:05:57Z Development of a hydrocyclone as a maintenance free aquarium filter Kee, Yew Hwee. Heng Kok Hui, John Gerard School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Manufacturing::Product design 86 p. Common home aquarium filter in the market requires frequent cleaning and maintenance to keep it in proper operational order. This project serves to design a low maintenance filter to alleviate the aquarist from such agony. It was found that the mechanical stage of all filters do not remove waste matter from the water column but merely traps and isolate it as the waste continues to foul the aquarium water. A filter system utilizing a hydrocyclone for the mechanical filtration stage was designed that separates the water into a clean and dirty component and further isolates the dirty component in a separate compartment. Sizing calculations were done for the hydrocyclone, a physical prototype was built to validate the suitability of application in a simulated environment utilizing small polycarbonate bits as waste matter. It was found that the hydrocyclone was able to separate the water into clean and dirty components with a waste specific gravity of 1.19 and concentration of 0.01 percent by mass with a discharge rate of 3.54 cubic millimeters per second. This projects proves that concept of utilizing the hydrocyclone separation technique is applicable and can achieve the design objective of isolating the waste matter from the water column. This results in a low maintenance filter system that only requires the hobbyist to drain the waste collection chamber of its' contents once a week.
