The threat of terrorism is real and has been exacerbated by the events of September 11, 2001. The attack on the World Trade Centre in New York City claimed the lives of nearly 3000 people from some 85 countries, underlining the appalling nature of transnational terrorism. With its strong stance on terrorism, Singapore remains high on the list of targets for terrorist action. Unconventional terrorism is less likely than conventional attacks but still remains a threat, as can be seen by the Tokyo sarin gas incident in 1995. Hence, on top of the implementation of a National Security Architecture, chemical, biological and radiological response capabilities must be fine tuned to enhance our capabilities against this multi-faceted threat.
