Description
Summary:This project takes a close look at biological mechanisms in self-renewing properties of adult versus embryonic stem cells. Although all stem cells have the unique ability to self-renew, adult and embryonic stem cells do no self-renew in a similar pattern under similar conditions. This project revolves around studying the different cocktails of factors required in maximizing this potential of both adult and embryonic stem cells, for the benefit of research and medicine. Self-renewal requires the integration of survival signals and proliferation controls with the maintenance of an undifferentiated state. This demands a complex crosstalk between extrinsic signals from the microenvironment and the cell-intrinsic regulators of self-renewal.
