Description
Summary:This research seeks to examine the ideals of beauty and their pursuit among young adults both male and female aged 18 to 25 years old in Singapore. There is little research in the past exploring the period of young adults’ lives that are affected by the lure of beauty ideals. Also, industries such as the media and advertising industries have continued to construct beauty to attract its young audience and consumers. Through the use of in-depth interviews, participants’ opinions and attitudes about their own beauty ideals are determined and discussed. The responses of 18 young adults show that as age increases, identification with the inner Self becomes stronger as compared to the supposedly outer and projected-self which is seen to be mediated by the cultural industries. Furthermore, this study has shown that social factors such as social circles, gender, family and religion help to balance the views of young adults on their beauty ideals.
