Summary: | The airport terminal operations refer to the capacity of the portion of an airport's property
not utilized by aircraft to accommodate passengers, airport visitors and ground access
vehicles. Passengers handling facilities such as check-in counters, immigration counters
and passengers dwell spaces such as the gate lounge are part of the airport landside
components.
Airports need to analyze its landside capacity to evaluate if the capacity of its passengers
handling resources can meet the increasing demand. It helps the airport operators to plan
and take preventive actions to avoid the negative consequences, such as over crowded,
extra-ordinary long waiting time, and etc. With the intensive regional competition among
airports, the evaluation of service level is critical to airports. Most of the service level
evaluations are done through passenger surveys. Although a lot of researches have been
done to improve the survey questions, there are still arguments about how reliable they are.
Another way to analyze the landside capacity of an airport is through simulation. It
provides many insight quantified details about the airport operations, which can not be
achieved through surveys. This report presents a web based planning and evaluation
system, which is driven by an simulation model done by Arena. The system provides the
web-based interfaces for analyst to design the simulation experiments and conduct the
what-if analysis. The Arena simulation model is hlly controlled through the thin-client
structure. It also help to analyze the results through a few proposed methods, like
sensitivity analysis, correlation analysis, Level of Service Calculation and etc. Some latest
Level of Service standards are discussed and incorporated in the design. |
