Traditional best-effort service provided by the current internet cannot offer an acceptable level of service quality to this type of applications. Active networks break this tradition by letting the network perform customized computation on entire packets including their payloads. The main aim of active networks is to advanced networking services and to increase the flexibility and customizability of the network.
