Summary:Anime, or Japanese Animation, origins in manga (Japanese comics) has its unique recognizable style and a wide range of audience not only in Japan but also around the world. Traditional 2D anime production has always been time-consuming and labor-intensive, especially for the coloring of the shading part, which is the most distinguished part of anime from other cartoons. In this thesis, we propose a semi-automatic shading pipeline based on surface reconstruction for 2D animation, especially for Japanese anime style to provide more efficient method of performing the tasks. This technique will be investigated and introduced into an existing animation system known as CACAni (Computer – Assisted Cel Animation).
