During the process of translation, the fundamental problem occurred from the cultural transmission between the source culture and the target culture always exists. Thus the domestication and foreignization were the two translation strategies which were developed to explain the phenomena whereby the translator chooses the translation strategy which best suits the targeted audience. However, these discussions and arguments were mostly based on literary translations. This paper aims to examine the changing subjectivity of the Singaporean Chinese, through the change in the transliteration of Yishun (Mandarin Chinese) New town (Mandarin Chinese), which were once transliterated as Nee Soon (Chinese Dialect) New Town. Both Chinese dialect and Mandarin Chinese had acted as the agent of the construction of the subjectivity of the Singapore Chinese under different time period. They had affected the choice of language which the transliteration were based upon and thus, represented the effort that the government is making in consolidating and constructing a unified ethnic and national identity. |
