Effect of chitosan to PEO ratio to achieve the desirable fiber-typed chitosan products

Polymer solutions with various chitosan/PEO ratios (Chitosan + PEO) were electrospun. The electrospun chitosan-based products were predominantly chitosan beads or beaded chitosan fibers. At higher PEO concentration or lower chitosan/PEO ratio, the electrospinning favored the formation of beadless ch...

Description
Summary:Polymer solutions with various chitosan/PEO ratios (Chitosan + PEO) were electrospun. The electrospun chitosan-based products were predominantly chitosan beads or beaded chitosan fibers. At higher PEO concentration or lower chitosan/PEO ratio, the electrospinning favored the formation of beadless chitosan fibers. Similarly, the increase of PEO concentration results in longer average diameters in the produced fibres. The electrospinning of blended solution prepared from chitosan and PEO was affected by the chitosan/PEO mass ratio and the aging of blended solution owing to chitosan-PEO phase separation. Several types of electrospinning patterns were also observed and were utilized to explain the formation of flawed chitosan fibers.
