PT has many features that are suitable for the miniaturization of the switching power supply, which offers a promising application area for PT. This research work focuses on the analysis and design of piezoelectric transformer for the high frequency switching power supply. Firstly, an equivalent circuit based on ID model of PT is derived. Then, the 3D model of PT is developed in order to give a better description of the physical nature of PT, and a simulation method is presented. A finite-element analysis (FEA) software package is used as the simulator. Next, the piezoelectric characteristics of several types of single-layer and multilayer piezoelectric transformers (MLPT) are calculated and visualised by using FEA simulator and the equivalent circuit, and discussions are made on how to get better properties for PT in the power supply applications. Finally, this thesis presents a design method of PT for the switching power supply. The analysis for PTs and MLPTs in 3D environment is suitable for the high frequency switching power supply. In comparison with the traditional design, the design method based on the simulation technique reduces the testing cycles and the experimental cost.
