In power plants, prime movers driven by diesel engines are frequently used as backup sources for industry power requirements and in load centers susceptible to large load changes. Since changes in load demands may be sudden, it is important that the diesel prime movers have fast dynamic response and good disturbance-rejection capability. However, the presence of an unknown, nonlinear engine dead time and other uncertain parameters give rise to a serious control problem and significantly degrade the performance of the diesel engine system. Although conventional PID control schemes are widely employed in diesel engine speed control in the industry, which give acceptable performance, the PID controllers are not able to handle large variations in the engine dead time and other system parameter uncertainties. The problem is more serious in parallel-diesel engine systems because of existence of the interactions among engines. Thus, improved control techniques need to be investigated.
