Fingerprinting based localisation on mobile phone

The increase emergence of mobile computing devices, such as handheld devices, and local-area wireless networks has fostered a growing interest in location-aware system and services. In this Final Year Project (FYP) report, we focus on the correlation between the location and received signal strength...

In this Final Year Project (FYP) report, we focus on the correlation between the location and received signal strength of the Wi-Fi signals to determine the indoor positioning of the user. This is due to the wide availability of wireless local area network (WLAN) infrastructure and the ease of obtaining such signal strength measurements by standard IEEE 802.11 wireless antennas. In this report, we will discuss the different ways and techniques used in indoor localisation like Time of Arrival, Angle of Arrival and Location Fingerprinting. Since the earlier two have the need of highly specialized hardware then the latter, we opt to investigate a solution that adopts Location Fingerprinting which makes use of signals strengths. Furthermore we will discuss the factors that might affect the signals strengths. After that, the implementation and the process of the whole system will be documented in this report.
