Description
Summary:Motors have been an important part of people’s daily lives. Be it driving a car, using the lift, or enjoying the air conditioning, all of them require the use of a motor. As technology improves, there is a need for motors with better performances. In year 2005, Joseph Flynn came out with a new motor design that works on the principles of Parallel Path Magnetic Technology. This motor is potentially 3.5 times more efficient than the conventional motors. Hence the Flynn motor was chosen as the title of this project to evaluate its performance. The two objectives for the project were to design and fabricate a Flynn Motor prototype that works on the principles of Joseph Flynn's Parallel Path Magnetic Technology and also to test and evaluate its performance. The Flynn motor prototype was constructed using an old induction motor. Upon completion, it was observed that the motor prototype was only able to align two of it rotor poles with the two stator poles. After that the rotor vibrated that same position without any further rotation. After verifications it was concluded that it was due to the wrong stator and rotor pole alignments that the Flynn motor prototype had failed to rotate. The structural design and material of the original rotor had also affected the flow of the magnetic flux. Due to time constrains, the poles alignment problem and also the rotor material, the full performance of the Flynn motor could not be tested and evaluated. Therefore, it is recommended for the project to be extended to manufacture a rotor and stator, using laminated steel sheets, with the correct poles alignment so as to construct a Flynn motor with much better performance.
