The synthesis and characterization of nanometer sized carbon clusters have attracted growing interest within the scientific community. In order to synthesis diamond nanocrystals on a large surface area and surface modification of material by carbon ion implantation, a filtered cathodic vacuum arc was used to generate plasma with high carbon ion density and the ions were accelerated towards the fused silica substrates at a shallow depth of about 50 nm using negative pulse biasing, this was followed by thermal annealing in forming gas (4% H2 in Ar), air and vacuum ambients. The microstructure changes on the surface were examined by Raman spectroscopy. Nano-hardness was measured for the implanted fused silica and there are good improvements. Potential applications for carbon ion implanted fused silica are also discussed.
