In most research work done on rechargeable batteries, little investigation has been done on how the batteries perform under different kinds of load. Electrical load is basically composed of resistive, inductive and/or capacitive. In this project, an intelligent battery testing setup was designed and built with the appropriate software written to allow various batteries to be subjected to various load condition representing real world conditions. It was evident from the findings that different loads produce different energy outputs. It was concluded that the NiMH battery does not perform to specification as well as the NiCd and variations exist between the manufacturers rating and the actual output. A load with a RL, RC or RLC circuit enabled a longer battery discharge duration when compared to a purely resistive load. Further investigation suggests that a more in depth research is required to quantify the energy output contribution by the inductive and capacitive load.
