Understanding the characteristics of various information sources is important when searching for sensitive information on a country, such as information on crisis events. This study examines the quantity, quality and stance towards the government of three groups of information sources on China, namely the mainland China newspapers. Hong Kong newspapers and alternative news media, when reporting crisis events. News reports relating to the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) between November 2002 and July 2003 were analyzed on how closely the reports are aligned to the stance of the Chinese government during the crisis.
