It was first interpreted by Yan Qu and Yan Peinan, then written in guwen (ancient Chinese script) by Lin Shu. Yan Qu and Yan Peinan, who are paternal cousins, were introduced to Lin Shu by Julin Khedau Yen-Fuh while working in the Translation Institute of the Imperial Academy. Given the obscure source language text for which the three men relied upon for translation, researchers are resorting to using modern day’s English translations of the Æsop’s Fables. This might cause misinterpretation and this is not at all helpful in analysing Yisuo Yuyuan. By doing a background research on Yan Qu and Yan Peinan’s mastery of languages, it is hoped to uncover the language version of the Yisuo Yuyuan’s source language text. Besides, a table will be compiled to compare the contents of Yisuo Yuyuan with possible versions. Books from Lin Shu and other authors from the early 20th century can provide clues in finding the source text. After the source text is uncovered, it will be compared to the Yisuo Yuyuan to shed light upon the intent of Lin Shu for rewriting the Æsop’s Fables. Lin Shu had added a massive amount of his views in addition to the epimythium of the fables. In some cases, the epimythium were dropped in favour of the commentaries by Lin Shu.
