Summary:Analysis of selected target genes of the ciliogenic transcription factor FoxJ1, LIM Yen Wei Cilia are hair-like protrusions extending from membranes. They are formed from basal bodies and elongate to form axonemes, via a process called ciliogenesis. Disruption in proteins involved in motile cilia, such as dynein, result in ciliopathies such as primary ciliary dyskinesia. We are interested in 7 genes downstream of FoxJ1, which is a master regulator of ciliogenesis. We hypothesise that these genes may localize to the cilia, highlighting the importance of these genes in ciliogenesis. RNA of these genes were made and injected into zebrafish embryos. At least one gene, tmprss13b, was found to localize to the cilia via confocal microscopy. The understanding of cilia-related genes is crucial in elucidating the pathway and mechanisms of ciliogenesis. Understanding how these genes work and function in normal circumstances will also make it easier to develop treatments for the different ciliopathies.
