Visual learning in science : development of video protocols for undergraduate laboratory classes

Text-based protocols used by students in laboratory practical lessons often lack the finer nuances as to how steps are carried out. In this project, a step-by-step video protocol was developed for students undertaking a particular laboratory module in college. The video includes animation to explain...

In this project, a step-by-step video protocol was developed for students undertaking a particular laboratory module in college. The video includes animation to explain complex background information that is hard to understand in text protocols, and demonstrations on how equipment should be handled correctly. It aims to provide a standardization of techniques used in laboratory work, and to alleviate the low teaching assistant-to-student ratio. A survey was also conducted after the development of the video. The class was split into two groups, one control group, and the other group that would watch the video before class. It was discovered that students had better planning and organizational skills as well as higher confidence in conducting the experiment after watching the video protocol. They also responded more ideally overall in a scored survey than the control group. Students from both groups were receptive to the idea of a video aid for practical lessons. Therefore, incorporating videos into laboratory classes could potentially increase students’ motivational levels and interest in laboratory work, leading to increased precision and accuracy.
