Summary: | Ultrasonics has been an established, versatile and widely used technique for many years, with pioneering work on ultrasound investigation being done as early as in the 1930s. Today, it has made a major impact in several areas, especially in the fields of medical diagnosis and industrial Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Thickness measurements, detection of defects in materials and to a limited but increasing extent, material characterisation, are the key uses for ultrasonics in the industry. Furthermore, ultrasound is able to inspect both metals and composites, which makes it ideal for the aerospace industry, given the rapid increase in the use of composites for aerospace applications. |
