Summary: | The main objective of this project is to provide a detailed investigation that covers the study of the radiation sources and level in Singapore and several typical countries around the world that includes USA, some European countries, Japan, China and India. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster was the recent incident that involves a series of equipment failures, nuclear meltdowns, and releases of radioactive materials at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant. This incident happened after the Tohuku earthquake and tsunami on 11 March 2011. It got the world alarmed for it was learnt that significant amounts of radioactive material have been released into ground and ocean waters. The project is structured into three main parts, mainly; understanding of radiation fundamentals, radiation reports of various countries and measurement of radiation in Singapore. The first part will cover on the introduction of radiation, sources of radiation, types of radiation, biological effects of radiation, radiation exposure, dosimetry and radiation doses and their measurement. The second part will discuss on radiation reports from countries mentioned earlier. Upon discussion, a comparison will be made between these countries. These reports are made in response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster and how it had affected the world. The final part will be results of radiation measurements made on various samples taken in Singapore. A survey meter was used to measure the amount of radiation exposed on these samples. |
