The optical and crystal properties of ZnO and ZnO-based semiconductor materials with and without surface plasmon (SP) effect were characterized by various techniques. This thesis focuses in two main aspects: (1) First part is the crystal and optical study of ZnO thin film, ZnCdO alloy and ZnCdO/ZnO single quantum well (QW). (2) Second part is the study of SP effect on ZnO and ZnO-based semiconductor materials. Among all the potential uses of these materials, light emitting device is one of the important applications. Thus, improving the emission efficiency of ZnO and ZnO-based semiconductors will be critical. SP effect has been certified as an effective way to enhance the emission efficiency of many semiconductor materials.
