Summary: | “Reward for Work; Work for Reward” is a fundamental principle in the Singapore education system. It represents the ideology of meritocracy in the system which rewards hard work and talent. Such a system allows students of different race, religion and socio-economic background to have fairness in competition. However, such fairness ironically leads to unfairness because of the existing inequality between individuals. According to Bourdieu, the cultural and social capital that a student possesses is determined by his family’s background. This paper explores the reproduction of social inequalities with meritocracy and how certain features of the Singapore society are incompatible with the aims of meritocracy. |
