Description
Summary:Purpose: This study investigated (i) the physical activity levels and patterns of Singapore children at Primary school entry-level, (ii) the association between their physical activity levels and health measures, (iii) the influence of gender on their physical activity behaviors, and (iv) the differences between physical activity behaviors on weekdays and weekend days. Methods: Physical activity monitoring using triaxial accelerometers was conducted on 119 Primary One students. 20-meter shuttle run test was used to determine cardiovascular fitness. Anthropometric measurements were done for assessment of health status. Results: There was a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and cardiovascular fitness. Participants engaged in 44.97 ± 14.50 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity on weekdays, and 38.52 ± 22.36 minutes on weekends. Conclusion: Singaporean children at Primary school entry level do not engage in recommended daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity required for cardiovascular health and fitness.
