Cai Wenjian School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Electrical and electronic engineering The Conventional Control Structure (CCS), which is widely used in process control applications, normally uses the conventional PID controller consisting of three parameters. However, the PID controller is a feedback system with constant parameters and it has no direct knowledge of the process. The Conventional Control Structure (CCS) does not facilitate transparent online tuning - the ability to independently manipulate the three important attributes of a control loop which are the set-point tracking performance, disturbance-rejection performance and loop robustness, since in the CCS the three performance criteria are closely related to each other and by performing online tuning they are affected simultaneously causing one (or) more to deviate from the desired value. Hence, this dissertation studies and implements an alternate control structure to the Conventional Control Structure (CCS) known as the Parallel Control Structure (PCS) which will facilitate transparent online tuning so that the performance criteria are achieved under ideal and non-ideal conditions.
