Summary: | Microsoft Kinect is a motion sensing device for Xbox 360 game titles. It enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 through gestures and spoken commands without the need to touch a game controller. The motion sensing is achieved via an infrared laser, depth camera and RGB camera, where the RGB camera provides a color image and the infrared laser and depth camera works together to provide depth information based on the principle of structured light stereo sensing.
As virtual reality technology is being increasingly adapted into medical application, the ability of the Kinect to track human joint positions might be useful in the field of biomechanics study and patient rehabilitation applications such as sports medicine and physiotherapy. A sports science application based on the Microsoft Kinect may potentially eliminate tracking accessories used in traditional biomechanics study. In addition, it could be used to allow patients to reduce the amount of hospital visits and perform exercises at home instead which will result in added convenience and reduced hospital cost. |
