Summary: | This report presents a design of an iPad application for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Children diagnosed with ASD, which affects one in every 165, often have difficulty in both recognizing their own emotional states and in recognizing the emotional states of people around them. They may not have appropriate strategies to deal with ever changing emotional states. They may not how to interpret the emotional states of others and know how to react to their feelings of anger or sadness, and often, their reaction does not match their emotional state.
Today, rapid developments in technology can help create a new future for people with ASD. With iPad and its applications gaining popularity as an educational tool for children with autism. The touch screen and simple layout makes the iPad more friendly for children with coordination or learning difficulties. With this technology, it is possible to create an application suitable for the children to learn to understand and react to the emotions in different scenarios. By incorporating videos that mimics basic everyday life scenarios, the iPad application aims to recreate the emotions within the embedded videos specially created which allows children with ASD to learn both recognising their own emotional states and in recognising the emotional states around them. |
