Huang Xiaoyang Li Lin School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering DRNTU::Engineering This Final Year Project (FYP) study is primarily an experimental based research and focused on the trials and developments for the fabricated improved heating system. Previous work deals with the surface characterization of thin liquid layers (silicone oil) upon heating and the analytical solution of steady and unsteady state one-dimensional heat conduction problems. An improved lumped parameter heating model has been adopted to improve the preciseness, accuracy and consistency of the overall one-dimensional heat conduction which involves meticulous selection of the heating system's materials and the development of a whole new process where the arc of errors from the previous heating process is eminently reduced. This is achieved by using a temperature control device, together with a modified heater. The following experiment tests have been conducted to evaluate the improved heating system: - Temperature gradient of the silicone resistor when used - Temperature gradient of the aluminum plate when heated - Infra red images of the aluminum plate The heating characteristics and performances are evaluated. It is concluded that the improved heater with aluminum plate can meet the requirement for the study of surface characterization of the silicone oil when heated.
