Summary: | DLC films are a type of solid lubricant finish that possesses excellent tribological properties such as with both low coefficient of friction and low wear rates. With the potential of being an advanced solid lubricant coating, it has thus far attracted a substantial amount of research interest. However, previous studies generally concentrated on modifying the mechanical and tribological properties of DLC films than finding the right fundamental on the effects of working condition to the tribological properties. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of different sliding velocities and loadings on the tribological behaviours under dry contact condition. An experiment was designed for this purpose, conducted under two conditions. The first condition was to set the sliding velocity constant at 0.05m/s but varies the loads as 3N, 5N, 7N and 10N. The second condition was the other way by setting the applied load as constant at 5N and varies the sliding velocities as 0.01m/s, 0.02m/s, 0.03m/s, 0.04m/s and 0.05m/s. The results were used for analysis to draw the conclusion. Upon which, a relationship was established with the increasing of sliding velocity or the applied load decreases the coefficient of friction and wear rates. Furthermore, the wear surfaces on the counter-balls and wear tracks were examined to observe the effect of sliding velocity on the rate of transfer layer, likewise for the applied load. |
