Description
Through "Orientalism" and "Narratology" analyzing perspective, this thesis aims to examine Malaysian Chinese author Li Yijun's third novel Yimeng zhi bei themes, which consist of "Culture of Malaysia" and "A Nanyang filled with thinkings of the east". This thesis also aims to examine whether the novel earns to it' s reputation as Hong Kong Asia Week "2012 Top Ten Novel", as well as to see if it really demonstrated the essence of which Malaysian Chinese literary works should posses of. As Malaysian Chinese Literature deliver the spirit of the ethic group, the aim is to revive the native, but Li’s Yimeng zhi bei seems deviated from the original intention. Using the complex human relationships as storyline, Li wrote about the stories across three generations of people, from Northern Malaysia to "New village"(xin cun). In order to attract reader's attention, the novel introduces mysterious "fate" elements into the stories, which controlled the lives of the Chinese characters. The Nanyang created by author was enveloped in a shroud of mystery, this enhanced the storyline of the novel, but on the other hand, this also weakened its function of representing the localness (native) of Malaysia. By analyzing the characters and plots of Yimeng zhi bei, this thesis try to reveal the inverse relations of the two main subject - "Culture of Malaysia" and "A Nanyang filled with thinkings of the east". This problem not only affects the narrative theme of the novel, but also distorted its localness (native) of Malaysia features. This thesis uses Edward Said's Orientalism to criticize Li Yijun's Yimeng zhi bei narrative and representation of the image of Nanyang. Li Yijun's Yimeng zhi bei conveyed nothing but a reprint of oriental thinking of Nanyang, which is just a very colonial and exotic argument under Western hegemony.
