Description
Summary:This report aims to analyze the banks' performance over the recent years, understand how and why different banks operate in different ways, and understand how banks' performance is measured. The Singapore economy is expected to exhibit continued growth in 1995. One of the most profitable sectors is the financial and business services sector. Focusing on the banking sector, banks face many challenges in the 21st century such as fee-based , income, capital adequacy, regionalisation, technology, competition and human resource. Implications of these challenges on the banks are shown in the research. Background information relating to the history, recent developments and operations were gathered to have a better understanding of the five selected banks, key indicators used to evaluate banks' performance are applied in our research. The traditional ROE measure, and three new measures, namely, Strategic Response Quotient, the Expense-to-Income Ratio and the Added Value : Inputs Measure were used as the performance indicators. Data gatheting and analysis from financial statements for each measure are shown in the report. As the three new performance ratios have not yet been widely published, this project serves to introduce them for application in future research on bank performance.
