“方式vs.路径”再讨论 :以现代汉语位移动词“追”为例 = “Manner vs. path” revisited : a case study on the motion verb “zhui” in modern Chinese

Description
The Modern Chinese motion verb zhui ‘chase’ has often been classified as a manner-of-motion verb (Gao 2001, Ma 2008, among others), although no clear explanation has been given as to why zhui is classified this way. In this paper, we aim to dissect zhui in order to find out whether zhui only exhibits features of a typical manner-of-motion verb and not that of path verbs. By using Classical Chinese and Modern Chinese data, this paper analyzes the semantics and syntactic representations of zhui from the perspective of the syntax-semantics interface. This paper also uses a multi-angle approach in analyzing whether zhui encodes path information or manner information, such as tests distinguishing path verbs from manner-of-motion verbs, comparison with other typical motion verbs involving legs and cross-linguistic comparison, among others. This study discovers that zhui not only possesses the features of a manner-of-motion verb, but also exhibits features of a path verb in some cases. In other words, zhui cannot be simply classified as a manner-of-motion verb. In addition, this paper proposes the different constraints for zhui to be categorized as a manner-of-motion verb or a path verb, and explores the relationship between zhui and the typological categorization of Chinese motion constructions. The methodology and discussions of this study may serve as a reference for studies of other non-typical manner-of-motion verbs or path verbs similar to zhui in Chinese or other languages.
