Description
Summary:Singapore is on the path towards rapid population ageing as an increasing number of baby boomers approach their 60s. Against the backdrop of an ageing population and possibly an ageing workforce, this study employs the political economy of ageing and life course perspectives to analyse the work and retirement decisions of ageing baby boomers. A qualitative research design was chosen, with information gathered through face-to-face interviews with 20 participants of varied socio-economic backgrounds. Findings suggest that structural constraints at the macro-level, as well as social relations at the micro-level produce different work and retirement options for different individuals. Also, work and retirement options are not fixed and can be re-shaped over the life course as individuals’ social and economic circumstances change.
