A qualitative research design was chosen, with information gathered through face-to-face interviews with 20 participants of varied socio-economic backgrounds. Findings suggest that structural constraints at the macro-level, as well as social relations at the micro-level produce different work and retirement options for different individuals. Also, work and retirement options are not fixed and can be re-shaped over the life course as individuals’ social and economic circumstances change.
