Small and medium entreprises (SMEs) in Singapore, as defined by the Economic Development Board (EDB), are companies that employ fewer than 50 staff. EDB (1991) conducted a survey on small and medium entreprises in Singapore, and found that there were a total of 84,811 entreprises. 77,533 (91.4%) of these entreprises were identified as small and medium entreprises. Small and medium sized entreprises provided another profit centre for banks as intense competition from other financial institutions in the large entreprises market had eroded their earnings received.
