Description
Summary:This paper investigated the conflict between Generation X and Y in the workplace. Values, motivation, work ethic and career orientation of Generation Xs and Ys were compared. There were numerous differences between the values that Generation Xs and Ys held. Hence, various points of contention surfaced. A mechanism on how the conflict between the Generation Xs and Ys arises and ways for resolving the conflict were proposed. The mechanism occurs in two phases, the first phase is where one acquires a wrongful belief through either a self fulfilling prophecy or a fundamental misattribution error and the second phase is where one strengthens that wrongful belief through a confirmation bias. Three solutions were proposed, which involves the use of education to help forge better understanding between co-workers, Albert Ellis’ Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (ABC approach) to help in resolving conflicts and objectively tackling the problem.
