Summary:The healthcare delivery system is confronted with the challenge to offer an increasing variety of healthcare services according to individual patients’ medical needs while in the meantime to control rapidly increasing healthcare cost. This thesis investigates the theoretical feasibility and practical applicability of adopting mass customization for healthcare service delivery. Three main issues are addressed, including patient-centered pathway identification, healthcare process modularization, and healthcare service configuration. A method based on process mining is developed to extract clinical pathways that reflect the mapping relationship from individual patients’ medical needs to healthcare services required. A method based on design structure matrix (DSM) is developed for process modularization and sequencing. A decision support system is subsequently developed to integrate individual patients into healthcare service configuration, which is formulated as a dynamic resource-constrained project scheduling problem. A bi-level GA-based algorithm is developed for problem solving and illustrated with a case study by examining different schedules and the associated resource utilization. It is found that healthcare service configuration enables healthcare services to be customized according to individual patients needs and delivered with high efficiency.
