At the same time, the project seeks to determine any substantial change in the savings-consumption pattern of the younger generation. As such, a questionnaire survey based on the aspired lifestyles, future plans, credit cards, and priorities in life was conducted. In order to be more reflective of the project objectives on the more promising and younger generation, graduating students from Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore were chosen as our sample respondents since they are the more likely candidates to own credit card. Our results have provided us with interesting insights into the perceptions of the younger generation towards future expectations and ambitions. This has enabled us to draw conclusion on the issues that were addressed above. Of great concern are the findings that undergraduates exhibit a lack of interest towards setting up their own businesses and starting a family. Coupled with the portrayal of the typical undergraduate as a big-spender and one who is highly receptive to credit taking, the above findings are hardly surprising but is of an alarming concern for the governing authorities whose worries include lack of entrepreneurial spirit, erosion of thrift among the young, reluctance in and procrastination on starting a family, unrealistic expectation on future lifestyle . This study attempts to verify the Monetary Authority of Singapore's concerns on the erosion of
thrift among the young and the possible inflationary pressures caused by the rising usage of
credit cards. At the same time, the project seeks to determine any substantial change in the
savings-consumption pattern of the younger generation.
As such, a questionnaire survey based on the aspired lifestyles, future plans, credit cards, and
priorities in life was conducted. In order to be more reflective of the project objectives on the
more promising and younger generation, graduating students from Nanyang Technological
University and National University of Singapore were chosen as our sample respondents since
they are the more likely candidates to own credit card.
Our results have provided us with interesting insights into the perceptions of the younger
generation towards future expectations and ambitions. This has enabled us to draw conclusion
on the issues that were addressed above. Of great concern are the findings that undergraduates
exhibit a lack of interest towards setting up their own businesses and starting a family.
Coupled with the portrayal of the typical undergraduate as a big-spender and one who is highly
receptive to credit taking, the above findings are hardly surprising but is of an alarming
concern for the governing authorities whose worries include lack of entrepreneurial spirit,
erosion of thrift among the young, reluctance in and procrastination on starting a family,
unrealistic expectation on future lifestyle . |
