Description
Summary:Kiasuism is a social manifestation in Singapore and kiasu is a defining feature of Singaporeans. However, current literature on kiasuism did not clearly define kiasuism and investigation of the topic has been restricted to behavioural aspects. The underlying principles driving kiasu behaviours displayed by Singaporeans have yet to be examined. Hence, this study adopted a qualitative approach to investigate the underlying principles motivating and sustaining kiasu behaviours among Singaporeans. Inductive thematic analysis of data revealed that the kiasu behaviour is driven and sustained by an interaction between environmental influences in Singapore and individual differences amongst Singaporeans. By including an individual‟s drive and intention behind performing acts of kiasuism into consideration, findings of this study pave the way for a clearer understanding of kiasuism concept and development of more conclusive measures of kiasuism.
